Dr. Henning Høgh Jensen has worked with most aspects of plant production
and soil fertility in public research under temperate and tropical
conditions and teaches a range of topics related to Integrated Natural
Resource Management and Organic Farming
In research,
using methodology that spans from field experiments and multidisciplinary
on-farm studies to growth chamber studies on specific plant physiology and
enzymatic activities in plant tissue, particular focus has been on the
following topics:
·
The impact of tropical grain and fodder legumes in the dominant farming
systems of Africa.
·
The role of fodder and grain legumes in contributing nitrogen to
agricultural systems.
·
The impact of limiting phosphorus and potassium on production of leys and
biological nitrogen fixation.
·
The ability of crop species to utilise sparingly soluble phosphorus and
potassium sources.
·
The use of dynamic modelling to investigate farming systems.
Project
activities:
Coordinator
of the research programme “Pigeonpea-based Maize Production in Semi-Arid
Eastern and Southern Africa”. This project aims at improving the
livelihood of smallholders in Tanzania and Malawi by introducing new
medium-duration varieties of Pigeonpea into the maize-dominated cropping
systems during on-farm studies. Parallel studies at KVL investigate the
unique ability of pigeonpea to utilise sparingly soluble phosphorus
sources.
Participate
in the Biofortification challange programme with special focus on testing
bean genotypes under on-farm conditions to identify efficient genetypes
and the effect climate on uptake and remobilization.
In
teaching, particular emphasis has been on Organic
Farming in a North European context and on Integrated Plant Nutrition in
the Tropics. The teaching approach has been on interactive and
participatory learning modules. Following topics are typically covered:
-
Plant nutrition
-
Crop management
-
Biological nitrogen fixation
-
The flow and fluxes of nutrient and matter through farming systems
-
Soil fertility in the tropics
-
Integrated Plant Nutrition and Water Management
Teaching taking place outside KVL has been:
-
Extension
Officers: Since 2001 teaching a theme of “Integrated Plant Nutrient
Management” on the course “Conservation and Soil Fertility Management”
under Danida Fellowship Centre.
-
Development workers: Teaching a module of soil fertility and NRM in 1991
and 1992 on a course for development workers on Tropical Agriculture
organised by Danish Volunteer Service (NGO).
-
Information and Communication: Conduction courses for returning
expatriates for information work towards the Danish public.
